GARETH PUGH
SPRING 2009

Gareth Pugh is an English born designer who now works and shows in Paris. His career in designing started at age 14, when he began working as a costume designer for the English National Youth Theatre. He graduated from the prestigious Central St. Martin’s school for design and interned for Rick Owens in Paris. Pugh’s design aesthetic plays with form and volume while distorting the body in new ways.

Pugh’s Spring 2009 collection reminded me of a modern adaptation of the villains from the Disney film Tron. The hard geometric shapes and lines in the garments made me think of insect ectoskeleton meets medieval armor. His strict color palette of white in the front, and black in the back gave me an essence of innocence turning into sin. I especially loved his revival of the ruff, which resembled a younger menacing Queen Elizabeth. Overall, this collection was dark and intimidating, while still carrying a feminine spirit.
