A TRIBUTE TO ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Only days after his tragic suicide, it is only fitting to pay homage with a show from the great Alexander McQueen. Early in his career, McQueen was dubbed “l’enfant terrible” for his controversial and shocking designs. McQueen is one of the few designers who designed clothing to make a statement and pushed the boundaries of beauty. One would say that his clothes are unwearable, but when it comes to fashion, what’s important is emotion and the story that the designer is trying to tell.

McQueen’s Fall 2009 show is definitely one of my favorites. From the set to the soundtrack, it was awe-inspiring. The models resembled trashy clowns with their exaggerated lips and recycled materials for head pieces. McQueen opened his collection with his take on the some what drab hounds tooth, ad injected it with fresh madness. He then showed pieces that illustrated his love for the goth, fetish, and bondage. McQueen closed the show with the most outlandish of dresses. My favorite being the red printed mermaid dress with plated armor that covered the models skin. McQueen’s last piece was a bodysuit covered in black feathers that made the model look like a deranged cockatoo. This collection was shown when the economy was hurting fashion the most and designers opted for safer commercial clothes. McQueen does the opposite by creating a presentation full of drama, terror and innovation. These qualities will forever make Alexander McQueen a true artist.
